Genesis 24: 7 ‘The Lord, the God of heaven, who brought me out of my father’s household and my native land and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give this land’—he will send his angel before you so that you can get a wife for my son from there.”
Who is Rebekah?
Who is she, that God destined her to be Isaac’s wife?
Genesis 24:12-16 Then he prayed, “Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. 13 See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. 14 May it be that when I say to a young woman, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too’—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.” 15 Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milkah, who was the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor. 16 The woman was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ever slept with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again.
She was the answered prayer, Abraham is looking for Isaac to be his wife. A woman of his own kind. She was beautiful, very clean and with a kind and generous and has a willing heart.
Her Character and Attributes.
Genesis 25 and 27, reveals her character and attributes. Most especially on the episode of Jacob steals Esau’s blessing. If we will read the story of Esau and Jacob, for the first time, we probably could not understand how she does things to be in Jacob’s favour. For me, at first glance of the story, she was the villain who always stepped on the feet of the noob.
But why she does things in that way? A typical wife and a mother could possibly understand and relate to Rebekah’s character and attributes. She is a wife and a comforter, a teacher, a skillful household-maker, a strong-willed woman and a manipulative, and a meddlesome mother. Meddlesome mother? Oh-oh! Sounds bad? Maybe for some. I believe, being a meddlesome mother to her children is one of a mother’s attributes, if not, I do not know how a mother will brought up their children. =)
A Wife and a Comforter.
Rebekah became a comfort to Isaac, when Sarah passed on. Isaac, marry and loved her.
Genesis 24:66 ” Isaac mourn for his mother’s death, Rebekah act as his comforter”
Like Rebekah, we, as wives to our husbands, we should act as their comforter, especially, whenever they are down. We have to cheer them up. we should be as one flesh (Ephesians 5:31) — and unite our understanding, mutually.
Rebekah must be a good teacher to Esau and Jacob to recognised their inclination aptly. The boys grew up with their expertise being recognised. I believe as with her help and guidance. Uhm, of course, not forgetting Isaac’s help and guidance as well.
Genesis 25:27 “The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the open country, while Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents”.
For mothers out there, and also I am one in the group =). We are the first teacher of our children. They will learn their first ABC… and 123… at home. The Bible is one of the best platform, we, mothers must be guided on how our children should be brought up. We need to train up a child – starting from their formative years, in the way they should go. Because in the time they were old, they will not depart form it – Proverbs 22: 6 says that.
Our children need to recognise their inclination as early as possible. As I recollect, a mother’s ‘instinct’ will feel what their children’s future will be like according to their behaviour. Since they start to learned to talk, smile, laugh, sing or dance and the likes. A mother will start to think or even say, what or who they will be like in the future. I believe anyone here, who is also a mother could relate in these kind of scenes in their motherhood. We need to guide and help them to recognised their future. But of course, with the leading and conviction of the Holy Spirit.
A Skillful Household Maker.
Rebekah is very good household maker. She knew what is “yummy’ food for Isaac. She used her best skills to get her objective successful.
Genesis 27:9 “Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats, so I can prepare some tasty food for your father, just the way he likes it. “
A Strong-willed Woman and a Manipulative.
“Do what I tell you!” “Do what I say!” These, could be normal instructions for some mothers to their children, especially when in a hurry and would like to get an instant results of their instructions to their children.
Genesis 27:8 ‘Now, my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you:
Genesis 27:43 “Now then, my son, do what I say: Flee at once to my brother Laban in Harran.’
Rebekah, made it so obvious to be a strong-willed woman. Her determination, made it through the blessings Jacob had received. Part of being a strong-willed, is the chance of taking the risks, to the fact that she will own the curse that is accompanied her manipulation of stealing of earthly and spiritual blessings from Esau to Jacob — A motherly instinct just to give best for their children.
Genesis 27:3 “His mother said to him, “My son, let the curse fall on me. Just do what I say; go and get them for me.”
A Meddlesome Mother.
“Go and get them for me.” Maybe, at this juncture, Jacob was trembling to get the mother’s instructions be settled. Could probably his feeling was, “Sigh.” — with scratching of his head, and at the back of his mind, was also fears, of getting the consequences, if being caught by Isaac. But to Rebekah was firmed. Because she holds of God’s divine appointment and promise to her twins, that the older will serve the younger.
Genesis 25:23 “The Lord said to her,“Two nations are in your womb,
and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”
This promise of God to her was without Isaac in the picture. When Lord revealed God’s covenant to her twins, she remembered it and she holds of it —That she must see it happened. But her motherly instinct manipulated her to make it happened in a deceiving way. It could probably because she knew that Isaac was more into Esau’s favour— and Esau made decisions that they hated and gave them disgrace. This was when he married Hittite women – (Genesis 26:34). Though it has with a deceiving story, God allowed it to happened for His plan and purpose. True, that in the Bible, Jacob became ISRAEL, despite deceitfulness. And this is because…
Romans 8:28 “God will cause everything to work for good of those who love the Lord according to His purpose.”
Rebekah had a great role for ISRAEL. If not for her character and attributes of being a meddlesome, where could probably ISRAEL is, now. I believe if the story was not in this way, it would not be as interesting as it was and as it is. THE STORY OF ISRAEL —REBEKAH HAD MADE IT EVEN MORE INTERESTING and SHE WAS THE GREAT DIVINE ACCOMPLICE BY GOD. She allowed God to used her in the success of the story on how Jacob became Israel. How God’s Faithfulness is revealed in this story — A promised by God to Abraham, repeatedly to Isaac, and resulted to Jacob (Israel).
Though if you will notice in the Bible, Rebekah did not have a chance to see his beloved– Jacob. As no record of them had seen each other.
Rebekah, was like our typical mom at home. At times, we don’t understand how they decide for us– that makes us annoyed. They are the real household-maker, they serve as the Salt & Light of our family. They are being used by God, on how a family will be tied and bonded. Come to think of it, a house without a mom, will not be considered- a home.
Did you know that God loves mothers and is closed to His heart? Most of the time, a mother is used by God as vessel of His blessings, and one prominent fact is — Us!– for His purpose and to His glory. In the family, a Mother is the master (vessel) and God is the Mind (brains) for the household to be intact and be in placed.
— and so with her, REBEKAH: the masterMIND of the household of ISRAEL to be completed!
All glory be to God!
I pray that you are inspired by how God moves in our lives. No one can fathom out His plans for us. The only thing we know is, HE IS FAITHFUL. Especially, if we have a relationship with Him. It is more easy for you to hear His voice and He is more willing and able to show His Faithfulness to you. If you’d like to have relationship with Him, I will lead you in a short prayer. This payer is not a magic, but what makes it powerful is when you Believe in your heart and declare it with your mouth, that Jesus is Lord and He is your Salvation.
Romans 10:9-10 says, “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.
Thank you for your Son, Jesus, who died on the cross to wash away my sins. He is the sacrificial lamb. I believe that you rose him from the dead. Father, please forgive me. I fully surrender my life to you from now on wards. Lord, save me, I pray. In Jesus’ name, amen!
Hallelujah! If you have just prayed the Salvation prayer, you had made a great decision. Congratulations!
